(Jacksonville, Fla. – March 10, 2009) The Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra showcases
the music of 32-year JSO veteran and well-known percussionist, Charlotte Mabrey,
on Friday, March 20 at 11:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Mabrey takes on a spirited
percussion concerto by 35-year-old American composer John Mackey. The concert
then segues into the JSO’s performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2, one the
composer’s early works, known for its roots in pastoral and folk music.
Like the artist herself, Mackey’s percussion concerto is a piece that mixes
the old and the new – the fresh and the classical. As Mabrey puts it, “It is a
rock and roll piece, with lots of drums and groove related sections. I’m happy
to playing a piece that straddles both worlds.” David Lockington, music director
of the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra and the Modesto Symphony, guest conducts
the two performances on Friday, March 20 (at 11:00 AM and 8:00 PM), part of the
Jacksonville Greyhound Racing Discovery Series and the Mayo Clinic Coffee Series.
The concerts are sponsored by Regions.
Having taught at the University of North Florida for a number of years, Charlotte
Mabrey has become somewhat of a staple on the local music scene. Known for a wit
that many would say matches her talent, it is evident that Mabrey takes music
seriously, but also clear that she likes to have fun with even the most traditional
pieces. She is a multi-talented artist that is open to experimentation and yet
never strays too far from her roots.
